Jack tackles POS flooding problems, promises solutions in 2 weeks

Jack Warner and officials accompanied by the Mayor of Port of Spain toured flood affected areas in the city Monday and promised immediate action to solve the flooding problems.

The Works and Transport Minister said the ministry would install flaps in the Maraval river to prevent a backflow of water. He also promised to widen drains and install a retention pond.

He also visited the Princess Elizabeth Centre, that was severely affected by weekend floods. Warner said a retention pond would likely help the area where the home is located because it is below sea level. He said the works will be done in two weeks

“We are sticking to two weeks to get all that done. I know that is most uncharacteristic of a government department, but trust me, I am holding them to that,” he said.

He said his ministry is working closely with the Port-of-Spain Corporation, using its technical advice.

Warner's cabinet colleague, Health Minister Terese Baptiste-Cornelis, has recommended that the home for differently abled children be relocated to avoid the perennial flooding problem. However Warner said he believes a decision on that should not be made until he makes every effort to fix the flooding problem.

Warner and his officials also visited the Beetham area.

“We went to see some culverts that were blocked and water was not moving. We went to find out reasons for the blockage, and of course we saw tons of debris which we have to clear. Not only that, the culverts under the highway have collapsed, and that will have to be fixed, and some drains will have to be cleared again.

"They include drains close to SWMCOL (Solid Waste Management Company Ltd).” He said a visit to the Water and Sewerage Authority also took place to see if flooding impacted on the water system. “They are not,” Warner said.
