All 134 local government representatives getting offices, staff

Local Government Minister Chandresh Sharma told reporters Thursday Cabinet has approved a proposal to fund an office for every local government representative in Trinidad and Tobago. The cost will be about $10 million a year.

Sharma said this is the fulfillment of yet another promise made by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar. He said the People's Partnership government recognises the need for citizens to have easy access to their representatives.

The offices will help in that regard, he said, adding that the offices will provide additional services.

"These local government offices now will be a point of meeting as well. They will also be a document centre where you can obtain the necessary forms for passports, birth certificates, incentives, grants, funding.

"You can now go to your local government office rather than have to go to the Ministry's office in Port of Spain. So this will be your first call," Sharma said.

The state will fund all 134 offices and pay for staff and equipment. He sauid all clerical officers at the officers will get a monthly stipend of $3000. The ministry will provide $2500 for rent and $1000 for incidentals such as electricity and phone bills as well as stationery.
