Port of Spain Mayor Louis Lee Sing told reporters Thursday the Solicitor General has ordered the Port-of-Spain City Corporation to immediately "cease and desist" from impounding illegally parked vehicles in the city.
Lee Sing made the disclosure to the media following the city's statutory meeting at City Hall.
In January, Lee Sing announced that drivers who violate parking restrictions in the city would have their vehicles impounded. In addition he raised the fine for illegal parking to $5,000.
The move brought loud protests from all sectors, including government ministers who said that the mayor overstepped his jurisdiction. Senior Counsel Dana Seetahal also noted that there are no laws to support the move by the city.
Despite that, Lee Sing served notice that the corporation plans to challenge the order “all the way to the final conclusion.”
He said the corporation has written to the Solicitor General indicating its position and is still awaiting a response.
Lee Sing charged that the Government "is standing on the side of disorder” by demanding that he stop impounding illegally parked vehicles.
He said he believes that people who park illegally parked in Port-of-Spain should pay a heavier fine than the $5,000 he has imposed.
