Tobagonian Claude Berkley ordained new Bishop of T&T

Claude Berkley was on Thursday ordained as the new Bishop of the Anglican Church of Trinidad and Tobago.

Berkley, who is from Pembroke, Tobago, is the sixth person to be consecrated at the Holy Trinity Cathedral, in Port of Spain.

Chief Justice Ivor Archie, Senate President Timothy Hamel-Smith, Opposition Leader Dr Keith Rowley, former Prime Minister Patrick Manning, House Speaker Wade Mark, Archbishop Edward Gilbert and Chief Secretary of the Tobago House of Assembly, Orville London were among the dignitaries who witnessed the historic event.

Rev. Phillip Wright of Belize delivered the sermon, urging Berkley to "be yourself," and further unite people despite many obstacles in society. "Give people the opportunity to get to know you, you need to ask questions and not always provide answers."

In his sermon, the priest challenged Berkley to "know your people and be known to them." He said, "Be a faithful pastor. This goes beyond knowing their names and addresses; understand their lives and know what matters to them and how the church can make an impact on their lives."

Wright said, "The Church remains one of the instructive, meaningful and wholesome aspects which makes a remarkable difference for individuals and families," Wright said. "Our out-reach to family is far too important for us."

He noted that society is looking for strong leadership, trust and dependence and it is up to the church to instill "high moral and ethical grounds, honesty, decency, equality and compassion."

Wright told the congregation Berkley cannot do the job on his own and as such "it will be unfair to hold him totally responsible if things do not go our way." He called on those gathered to submit themselves to the core beliefs of selflessness and truth and noted they could always find comfort in the church.

"We have all the confidence that God will see you to completion," he said.
