Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar on Tuesday said she would like to see a national award to honour "outstanding and meritorious service to the development of women" added to the list of awards in Trinidad and Tobago.
She made the statement in an address at the Interclub of Trinidad and Tobago's 10th Annual International Women's celebration at the Hyatt in Port of Spain. The event was celebrated a week early because of Carnival.
Persad-Bissessar said Women's Day symbolises an "occasion to review how far women have come in their struggle for equality, peace and development".
She added, "It is in keeping with this philosophy of specially honouring women's contributions to the world, that I wish to share with you here today that beginning this year, in this new decade and new time for our country, Government proposes to add on a new category for the annual National Awards, which are given out on Independence Day.
"In addition to different categories of service, we propose to add another category titled 'The Woman's Public Service Medal of Merit Gold for outstanding and meritorious service to the development of women in Trinidad and Tobago'."
The Prime Minister spoke about her own life and career, noting several instances where she had to "go brave" and overcome obstacles in her path.

She thanked women for their dedication to the development of Trinidad and Tobago and urged them toll continue to work with the government in the fight for complete equality of women.
"Always remember that creating a country and world that is truly equal for women does not imply simply the absence of discrimination enshrined in the Constitution.
"It means having the confidence to change the world working hand in hand and alongside other women, ensuring and educating them about their right to participate, letting them know the importance of making their views heard and considered.
"It means building a country and world fit for women, where every single girl can grow to adulthood in health, peace, security and dignity."
Persad-Bissessar said until that day comes, "I say we have a grand task before us as women leaders. I pledge to you here today that truly, that day in Trinidad and Tobago will come. Under my administration, it will come sooner rather than later."

She said in anticipation of "this great day...I open every door of opportunity for our women and girls and indeed citizens of this country, since at least one of those doors must lead to the country we dream of and the nation of progress, peace, equality, equity and prosperity we know we can all build together. It is the least our children expect of us."
