Dookeran says new pension plan coming

Finance Minister Winston Dookeran said on Tuesday the Government wants to widen the pension coverage of all citizens in Trinidad and Tobago.

Dookeran said in restructuring the existing old age pension system the plan is to develop a national pension program to include public sector and private sector employees, as well as people who are self- employed.

"We are hoping to restructure the system to have pension stability over the medium term," Dookeran said at a function hosted by Guardian Holdings Ltd at the Hyatt in Port of Spain.

The minister said the new pension plan would involve consultation and will not necessarily mean that citizens will get more than the $3,000 a month in pension, which is the current ceiling.

He said he expects that by the middle of the year he would put the pension reform idea out for public consultation. However he said the reforms will take a long time to become a reality.
