The state is spending $312 a day to maintain each prisoner in Trinidad and Tobago, National Security Minister John Sandy told the Senate Tuesday in response to a question from the opposition.
Sandy said based on statistics up to December 31,2010 the toal bill for the 3,493 prisoners amounts to $397.8 million.
Sandy said the prison population includes 3,386 males, 107 female prisoners and 198 juvenile offenders between the ages of 16 years and 18 years at the Youth Training Centre in Arouca.
He said inmates are usually employed within the prison system in agriculture, construction, food preparation and tailoring and that reduces the cost to maintain prisoners.
