Toney elected Chairman of COP

Members of the Congress of the People (COP) have elected Joseph Toney as chairman of their party in executive elections held on Sunday. He ran against Hulsie Bhagan and won 53 per cent of the votes cast.

The party elected Vernon De Lima as Vice Chairman. Other elected members are:

• Ashaki Scott  - Secretary, Membership and Mobilisation
• Wendell Eversley - Secretary, Elections and Voter Registration
• Mahendra Dhaniram - Public Relations

Some members were elected earlier, unopposed: 

• Dr Anirudh Mahabir - Secretary,  Finance
• Dr Omar Ali - Secretary, Communications
• Clyde Weatherhead - Secretary, Education and Research
• Sarwanand Ragbir - Secretary, Field Operations

Voter turnout for the one-member, onbe vote election was low. Only 1,600 voted. Only those members who joined the party before April 17, 2010.
