Widespread floods hit Trinidad

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has been making an aerial tour of areas hit by extensive floods following heavy rains on Monday.

The Office of the Disaster Preparedness and Management (ODPM) has advised that it has activated all response mechanisms to deal with the floods. The hardest hit areas are:
  • Felicity
  • Edinburgh Chaguanas
  • Freeport, Carapichima
  • Couva
  • Claxton Bay
  • Marabella
  • Gasparillo
  • Tarouba
  • Cocoyea Village
  • San Fernando
  • Carenage
  • North Coast
  • East West Corridor
  • Williamsville
  • Hard Bargain
The government has advised that members of the protective services are out on the field doing assessments.

And the ODPM has alerted all first responders to render immediate assistance. The Trinidad and Tobago Fire Services and the Defense Force are also in the field, assisting the Disaster Management Units of the Municipal Corporations affected with their efforts to assist those who have been impacted.

Line Ministeries and Line Ministers, Chandresh Sharma (Local Government) Rudranath Indarsingh (Works) and Dr. Glen Ramadharsingh (Ministry of the People and Social Development) as well as MPs are also in the field assisting.

The Prime Minister will continue to monitor the situation and take all steps to ensure that assistance reaches those who need it in the shortest possible time.
