Police searched the home of the late Hafeez Karamath Thursday in their continuing corruption investigations into UDeCOTT and its former executive director, Calder Hart.
Karamath died suddenly last year before he appeared before the Uff inquiry into UDeCOTT and the construction sector. His company was the main contractor at the Brian Lara Stadium. Karamath was a key witness at the inquiry.
The stadium is part of the focus of investigations into UDeCOTT. It is several years behind schedule and still incomplete. And its cost has crossed one billion dollars so far.
Media reports say police seized several firearms, documents and a computer from the Karamath home at Valsayn. The reports said police also raided premises at El Socorro as part of their investigations.
One newspaper report said five members of the Karamath family were taken into custody for questioning. However the paper said it was unable to get additional details on that from the lawyers for the family.
Attorney General Anand Ramlogan told reporters he was aware of the police action and hopes that it would expedite the investigations and "assist the interests of justice".
Ramlogan expects to be briefed Friday on the police action.
