New CoP to be paid $132,000/month: Newspaper report

The Trinidad Express newspaper is reporting that Canadian Dwayne Gibbs will earn $1.5 million a year if cabinet approves the contract he negotiated during his brief visit to Port of Spain earlier this week.

That amounts to a monthly salary of $139,916. The paper also reported Friday that Deputy Police Commissioner Jack Ewatski, who is also a Canadian, will get $106,333 a month.

Acting Commissioner of Police James Philbert receives an average monthly salary of $40,000, the paper reported. And Deputy Police Commissioners Stephen Williams and Maurice Piggott get $24,000. Both of them are the same rank as Ewatski.

The Express said in addition to the high earnings, the State has agreed to pay the cost of accommodation for both Gibbs and Ewatski and provide each of them with an unmarked vehicle for their private use.

The paper said it contacted both men by telephone who declined comment on the matter.

However, the Express quoted Gibbs as saying, "I am hoping that once everything is finalised, I should be in Trinidad and Tobago by mid-September. No date has been finalised yet as to when I would arrive in the country to take up duties."

It also quoted Ewatski as saying he would be be available for duty as soon as Cabinet makes a decision on the matter.
