PM, NY travel agents discuss tourism issues

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has met with a group of travel agents in New York who are interested in developing closer ties with Trinidad and Tobago. The meeting focused on several matters related to the development of tourism links.

The meeting focused on all issues affecting making Trinidad and Tobago a destination of choice for the North American traveler with ideas on how to ensure that Piarco International Airport becomes the hub for travelers to the Caribbean and South America.

Representatives from Someday Travel, Sandra's Travel, Rising Sun Travel, Pan American Travel, Marketing Challenges International, TravelSpan Vacations and Mighty Marketing attended the meeting.

The agents also raised the issue of Caribbean Airlines (CAL), noting that they have difficulty dealing with just CAL. They said they believe Trinidad and Tobago would benefit from having more carriers operating services into Trinidad and Tobago from New York.

Press Secretary Gavin Nicholas said the Prime Minister noted the concerns and promised to discuss the various issues with the relevant ministers on her return home on Sunday.

Earlier in the day, the Prime Minister met with Amitabh Desai, the Director of Foreign Policy of the Clinton Foundation to discuss the progress being made in Haiti and possible synergies for the development of the Prime Minister's Children Life Fund, Nicholas said.

The Prime Minister has been invited to participate in the Clinton Global Initiative at the UN General Assembly in New York next month.
