Local Government Minister Chandresh Sharma told reporters Thursday each of the 14 regional corporations in the country will have its own Independence Day celebrations. He said the cost would be about $200,000 for each. The minister said he expects the celebrations to include fireworks, refreshments and cultural presentations with the event at the Port of Spain City Corporation being more elaborate since it is the capital city.
Sharma also said the celebrations will spread over a number of days starting on August 28 at the Couva/Tabaquite/Talparo Regional Corporation.
National Security Minister John Sandy told reporters this year the traditional Independence Day parade will return to the Queen's Park Savannah and continue on the streets."We have decided to take it back to the Savannah to bestow upon it the type of pomp and ceremony that is required of a celebration of that nature," Sandy said.
