People's Partnership to unveil LGE manifesto

Kamla Persad-Bissessar is planning public consultations to have a date for Local Government constitutionally guaranteed. This will mean that the rights of citizens to an effective Local Government will not be ignored and neglected again, she said at a meeting at the Rienzi Complex Tuesday night.

"That is what happened under the previous regime. You could not vote for your representative for so many years. For seven years, not a single Local Government election because they could use a simple majority to subvert the will of the people," the Prime Minister told supporters of her United National Congress (UNC).

She also unveiled the People's Partnership manifesto for the July 26 Local Government Election (LGE), titled Flagship for Human Development. She said it is based on five pillars of development:
  • people-centred development
  • good governance
  • accountability
  • national and personal security
  • strategies for a more diversified economy, including the role of communities in achieving them
Persad-Bissessar said the launch of the manifesto is scheduled for a campaign meeting in San Fernando Friday night. She told supporters her People's Partnership Government has already delivered on some of its promises and is working hard at delivering more.

She said the vehicles used by delegates during the Fifth Summit of the Americas and the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting would be given to the Ministry of National Security to be used in the Police Service.
