Column: Rowley needs to be constructive or he should shut up

I used to think that compared to many of his PNM pals, Rowley had some degree of credibility in the execution of his duties.

But progressively, ever since becoming "Leader of the Near Non- Existent
Opposition", he has eroded that credibility almost every time he has opened his mouth.

Valid criticism of what a government intends to do has its place. It raises
the possibility of alternative courses of policy and action which may be preferable to take.

But this knee jerk "evryting gotta be bad" reaction to
all and everything the government or its Ministers say and do, is asinine.

Even if these petty comments actually reflect what he personally feels, and
I for one don't think so, then they are HIS opinions. They should not be viewed with the gravitas of being "official" statements.

That aside, the PP government seems overwhelmingly to be doing what the
majority of the electorate want done and approve of in trying to steer this country away from the corruption and squandermania that Rowley himself was a party to.

Even if only by virtue of not turning his back on such activities and leaving the PNM, years ago. I guess the pull of the paycheck was too great for him.

Now everything the government does is wrong, according to him. He needs perhaps to close his mouth and do some math, instead.

If the actions of the government are a reflection of what the majority of
the voters want done, then each petty criticism is a criticism of the majority of the voters.

In effect he's saying the country is wrong for not reelecting Manning and
his buddies, instead of trying to regain their country.

To me, as long as the government continues to do what follows the needs and
wants of those that voted for them, Rowley's utterances of this calibre are no different to the incessant yapping of a dog that is home alone, in a neighbour's yard. Irritating, but just something we have to individually "tune out".
