It's official.
Former Speaker of the House of Representatives Nizam Mohammed is the new chairman of the the five-member Police Service Commission (PSC).
He was appointed Wednesday for a three-year term. Other members of the PSC are: former Industrial Court judge Addison Khan, attorney Martin George, Kenneth Parker and Jacqueline Cheeseman.
Mohammed is a lawyer and a former opposition Member of Parliament.
Opposition leader Keith Rowley had strongly opposed Mohammed's nomination as a member of the commission, saying the former MP is still active in partisan politics. He also said the president did not consult him on the matter.
Despite Rowley's objections, the Parliament approved the president's nominees and on Wednesday members of the board took office.
One of their first tasks will be to appoint a new Commissioner of Police (CoP). Canadian Dwayne Gibbs has been approved by Parliament. However it is the PSC that must hire the new CoP.
