Media reports say police have found evidence that points to arson. Experts are continuing investigations at the site.
The fire started at around 1.45 a.m. on Sunday. A car caught fire and exploded, trapping the family inside.
The victims have been identified as Ranchan ’Bellies’ Dourgah, 54, his wife, Taramatie Sirju-Dourgah, 56, their grandchildren, Nivon Bobby David, 11, and 22-month-old Christianna Dourgah, and their son-in-law, Titus Joel Gabriel, 27.
The murder toll for the year now stands at 195.
Police are working on the theory that there was a drug connection to one of the victms. But the family has dismissed the suggestion and the opposition candidate for the area, Dr Fuad Khan, has said he doesn't believe that there is any link to drugs.
Madhurie Dourgah, whose parents, children and husband died in the fire, told the Trinidad Express police have not told the family anything about the investigation.
Some relatives and friends of the family have suggested that there is a political connection to the tragedy. They say Dourgah and his wife were strong UNC supporters and had received death threats.
But the politicians fighting to win the seat in the May 24 election have said they don't believe that politics was behind the attack.
