Five members of the family died in the fire and explosion in the San Juan-Barataria area, including two little children. The head of the family was a known supporter of the opposition UNC and had been in a walkabout on behalf of the UNC candidate, Dr Fuad Khan.
Both Khan and the PNM candidate, Joseph Ross, have said they do not believe the attack was political motivated, but some people close to Dourgah have suggested that politics was behind what happened.
"My thoughts and prayers and the thoughts and prayers of our nation are with you," she said in a media statement.
"We do not know what caused this terrible tragedy and await the results of forensic testing. Although speculation is natural, I urge you not to blame others or blame this family until we know what happened," she said.
Persad-Bissessar said she was making the statement on behalf of every member of the People’s Partnership.
"We are very alarmed at the behaviour we are seeing and hearing. Acts of violence and threats on our supporters or by our supporters are condemned equally.
"I urge you all to bring this election atmosphere to a place where no one else is harmed or feels threatened," she said.
"If you feel strongly about who leads our country, use that energy with dignity and respect for each other. Use that energy to go to the polls on May 24th and vote. That is what happens in a democracy; that is what happens in Trinidad & Tobago," she advised.
