Five people were killed in a fire and explosion at a home in the San Juan/Barataria area in Trinidad Sunday. The fire ignited a vehicle causing the huge explosion.
A JYOTI correspondent in Trinidad said two children, their grand parents and the children's father have been killed. Police and fire officials believe the fire at the home of a known UNC activist was deliberately set.
Relatives and neighbours tried to put out the blaze as they waited for the fire brigade, but it didn't help. The bodies of the victims were later found inside.
They have been identified as: Ranchan ’Bellies’ Dourgah, 54, his wife, Taramatie Sirju-Dourgah, 56, grandchildren Nivon Bobby David, 11, and 22-month-old Christianna Dourgah, and their son-in-law Titus Joel Gabriel, 27.
The children's mother, Madhurie, and her younger brother, Herman, were not at home when the fire started.
The PNM and UNC candidates for the constituency expressed concern over the tragedy. Our correspondent says the two men - Dr Fuad Khan and Joseph Ross - visited the scene shortly after the explosion went off.
But both of dismissed the suggestion that it was politically motivated.
However the Trinidad Expresss quoted a man identified as a relative of Dourgah as saying that Dourgah had been threatened by a group of men following a walkabout on behalf of the UNC candidate.
Police and fire officials are investigating. Police have set up a mobile post near the scene of the tragedy and have asked anyone with information about the fire and explosion to contact investigators.
