Muslimeen boss launches party, says woman must not lead

The man who led the failed 1990 coup against the Robinson government is getting directly involved in the May 24 general election. And he is making it clear that women have no business "leading the men" in politics or in the home.

Jamat al Muslimeen leader Yasin Abu Bakr launched his political party - the New National Vision - in San Juan Wednesday and called on citizens to use the movement as a forum to address any issues they have in the community.

Bakr conceded that he is not going to win, but raised certian issues that he wants to air, including the role of women.

"What is a woman doing leading these men?" he asked, in reference to the leadership of Kamla Persad-Bissessar.

"Your wife is ruling you?...The Bible says 'a man is the head of the house'," he declared.

Bakr told his audience that on different occasions he supported the People's National Movement (PNM) and the United National Congress (UNC).

"I made the UNC. We put them in the corridors of power," Bakr claimed. And he boasted of his feud with the PNM: "I put a snake in the balisier."

He said his organization was able to reduce crime in the 1980s and it can do it again, but the PNM has ignored that.

"They are wicked people. They can’t sleep when they know I am awake. They bringing all kind of Scotland Yard and even cloth yard, when all the time I was right here," he said.

Bakr is at the centre of a controversy relating to his allegations that he helped the PNM win the 2007 election in return for state favours.

PNM Leader Patrick Manning has repeatedly denied that but Bakr has insisted that he had a deal and that Manning reneged on it. The matter of Bakr's allegations is now the subject of a police investigation.
