Done deal; united opposition to face PNM in T&T election

The opposition in Trinidad and Tobago will fight the People's National Movement (PNM) as a united force in the May 24 general election in Trinidad and Tobago.

And Kamla Persad-Bissessar would lead the group, becoming prime minister if the opposition defeats the PNM.

The final accord was worked out after marathon talks following Friday's announcement that a deal had been reached between the Congress of the People (COP) and the United National Congress (UNC).

Other parties that have signed on to the accord are the National Joint Action Committee (NJAC) and the Movement for Social Justice.

In making the announcement Saturday the UNC leader declared, "Today is an historic day. There is no turning back now. We are fully committed to this movement."

Persad-Bissessar led the UNC team, which included party chairman Jack Warner and deputy leaders Roodal Moonilal and Suruj Rambachan. On the COP side, Winston Dookeran headed his team, which included deputy leader Prakash Ramadhar and Clyde Weatherhead.

Dookeran also described the accord as historic adding, "We now embark on a road for political battle. Perhaps this is the first time there is such a coalition of parties together, taking such a unified approach. This is a fresh start."

Dookeran said, "We see ourselves as a patriotic group and that is what Trinidad and Tobago needs."

The parties will now campaign on a common platform with Persad-Bissessar as the leader. The first joint political meeting is scheduled for next Wednesday at Fyzabad.
