Three more heads roll ahead of UNC vote

The United National Congress (UNC) on Friday fired one of its most loyal workers and party supporters and kicked her out of the office.

Karen Kissoon, the office assistant at Rienzi Complex, has been one of the most trusted employees and had worked there for several years. Sources tell JYOTI Kissoon got no notice and was told to leave immediately.

She is the latest casualty as the party. Dr Glen Ramadharsingh, who was the office manager, was dismissed earlier this month and replaced by Pamela Ramsingh, a niece of Mrs Oma Panday.

The purge continued at the Office of the Leader of the Opposition, as well.

Opposition leader Basdeo Panday told Information Specialist Sarah Sooknanan on Friday he was not pleased with her work and put her on indefinite suspension.

Panday, who leaves for London on Sunday, told her he would decide her fate when he returns home. Our sources say Panday was upset that Sooknanan did not attend the UNC's meeting on Monday.

But sources say he accused her of working with Kamla Persad-Bissessar against him, a charge which she denied. Our sources say he explained that as a government-paid employee in the opposition leader's office she does researcher for all MPs, including Persad-Bissessar.

Sooknanan has been a dedicated party supporters who has attended UNC meetings without fail for the past several years.

She had worked closly with Persad-Bissessar during the time that the Siparia MP held the post of opposition leader. Other staff members, whio also worked with Persad-Bissessar are concerned that they might suffer the same fate.

Last week, Panday fired Rosalyn Dennie, the cleaner at his official office in Port of Spain who had been a loyal party supporter and had worked in the officer for several years. Panday refused to renew the woman's contract without giving any reason, our sources say.

Panday had complained that there was a "spy" at the officer and accused Dennie of working against him although he never offered any proof.

The staff changes effectively give Ramsingh full control of activities at the Rienzi Complex. Some party members are complaining that she is biased in handling applications for membership for the crucial internal election on January 24, 2010.

The party's registrations for the election close on Dec. 18 and members who oppose Panday are saying they cannot get the number of forms they need to register new members.

Executive member Sylvester Ramquar who is responsible for the party's Central constituencies has written Panday about the Ramsingh's role. In a letter to the leader he asked on what basis she has such responsibility and questioned whether she is an employee. He also asked why Ramsingh was present at a national executive meeting since she is not a member of the executive.
