PM won't apologize for statement about murder of 10-year-old

Prime Minister Patrick Manning told reporters Tuesday he will not make any apology for statements he recently made on the murder of ten-year-old Tecia Henry.

And he has no regrets about the statement, which prompted an angry reaction from the little girl's mother, who said Manning should apologize.

"I was just responding to commentators' impressions on the incident; whoever said anything else was just trying to be mischievous. And like anyone else, I condemn the death of any ten-year-old child," he said, adding, "But I have no regrets for anything I do."

Tecia was strangled to death near her home in Laventille. On June 21 Manning told members of his governing People's National Movement they should not take the murder at "face value". He did not condemn the killing.

Commenting on another unrelated issue, Manning said it is time for Trinidad and Tobago to have a judicial system designed to meet local needs which would see the removal of the Privy Council as the country's final Court of Appeal.

"The Privy Council was designed for the United Kingdom and that is a big problem we face today," he said.
