Unemployment rate in T&T falls to 4.9% for 2011

The latest labour force statistical data from Trinidad & Tobago shows that the national unemployment rate for 2011 was 4.9 per cent, a full percentage point down from the 2010 figure of 5.9 per cent.

The labour force in 2011 was 611,600, a decline of 1.2 % from the level recorded for the year 2010, which was 618,800.

The unemployment rate, which is calculated as the number of unemployed persons as a percentage of the total labour force, declined for both males and females. The Male unemployment rate fell from 5.2% in 2010 to 3.9% in 2011. The unemployment rate for females fell from 7.0% to 6.3% over the same period.

The highest unemployment was among young people in the age groups 15 to 19 and 20 to 24. However both age groups recorded larger decreases in their unemployment rates.

Unemployment in the 15 to 19 age group in 2011 was 15.3%, down from 20.1% in 2010. The same trend was recorded in the 20 to 24 age group, where the rates fell from 12.4% in 2010 to 11.3% in 2011.
