Two T&T journalists to receive honorary doctorates from UWI

Therese Mills
Two journalists are among 20 Caribbean people who would receive honorary doctorates this year from the University of the West Indies (UWI) during its 2012 round of graduation ceremonies, which begin in October and continue through November.

They are Therese Mills, executive chairman, editor-in-chief and director of Daily News Ltd, publishers of Newsday in Trinidad & Tobago and Davan Maharaj, editor of the Los Angeles Times, one of the world’s largest newspapers.

Mills became the first female editor of a national newspaper in Trinidad and Tobago when she was appointed Editor-in-Chief of the Trinidad Guardian in 1989. After decades as a journalist—from reporter to senior feature writer to editor—she retired from that newspaper and began another chapter in her career.

She founded Newsday in 1993 and was also a founding member of the Commonwealth Journalists Association. She has won many regional awards during her pioneering career. She was awarded the Humming Bird medal in 1987 for her service in the field of journalism and in 1997 Mills was awarded a Long Service to Journalism Award from the Media Association of Trinidad and Tobago. She has published several books for children and young readers.

Davan Maharaj

Maharaj began his career in journalism at the Trinidad Express in 1980. He joined the LA Times in 1989 after completing graduate studies in the United states, working at first as a staff writer for the Metro and Business sections.

Two years later, he was promoted to Africa Bureau Chief, where he ran the Nairobi and Johannesburg bureaus, and wrote the award-winning series: “Living on Pennies” about life in poverty for hundreds of millions of Africans.

He then spent a year as Assistant Foreign Editor, where he edited stories about Russia that won the Pulitzer Prize for international reporting. For two years, he was Deputy Business Editor before taking over as Business Editor in 2007.

From 2008 to 2011, Maharaj was Managing Editor of the paper, with a newsroom of more than 700 people and a budget of US$100 million. He oversaw the coverage of two wars, the global financial crisis and the historic 2008 presidential election. In 2011 he was named editor of the paper.
