Prime Minister Kamala Persad-Bissessar said on Wednesday she has confidence in Jack Warner and told reporters she stands with her national security minister.
The Prime Minister was responding to questions about the findings of the Switzerland-based Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) which claimed in a report that Warner administered a secret US-dollar account with his personal and football funds.
Persad-Bissessar said she would not comment on the CAS findings because she had not seen the report. “I cannot comment on something you are telling me. I have to read it first. I would not be able to comment at this stage before I have a chance to read it,” she told journalists who explained their understanding of the findings.
However she reiterated that she has no problem with Warner or her other ministers.
At least one member of the Congress of the People (COP) has expressed concern about the matter. COP's acting chairman Vernon de Lima insisted that Warner should not have been appointed to cabinet and suggested he should be fired. His sentiments were similar to that of Opposition Leader Dr Keith Rowley.
“The Prime Minister no longer has any place to hide and I call upon her to keep the commitment she made last year which was to act when the evidence became available,” Rowley said. “Now that the findings are here she has no place to hide."
