PM announces cabinet changes Friday

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar will announce changes to her cabinet Friday. Foreign Affairs and Communication Minister Suruj Rambachan said Thursday the announcement is expected in the afternoon.

Persad-Bissessar has already announced one change to the governing structure, appointing prominent trade unionist James Lambert to the senate to replace David Abdullah.

One highly placed government source told JYOTI there won't be any dramatic change and some key ministries will remain untouched. At least one new face is expected.

Errol McLeod will keep his job as labour minister, the sources said, because the PM needs McLeod there more than ever now since he is recognised as a true labour leader and is needed to be the flagbearer along with Lambert for government's pro-labour policies.

Persad-Bissessar announced in May that she would reconfigure her cabinet after she had conducted an assessment. The overhaul will include chairmen of state boards.

There is strong speculation that the Prime Minister would keep the Communication portfolio within the office of the PM with a minister assigned to it. Rambachan currently holds that portfolio along with his other assignment as minister of foreign affairs. He is assisted by parliamentary secretary Senator Nicole Griffith-Dyer.

The Prime Minister is not revealing anything until she makes her announcemnt later Friday.

This is hert second cabinet shuffle. In June last year she made some changes that included the removal of the health minister and shiftingn COP deputy Leader Carolyn Seepersad-Bachan from energy to Public Administration, replacing Nan Ramgoolam, who is now the T&T Consul General in New York.

That realignment also saw the creation of a Transport Ministry with Devant Maharaj as the minister.
