T&T association in Ottawa announces big plans to celebrate 50th anniversary of independence

The Trinidad & Tobago Association of Ottawa (TTOA) has planned a variety of events to mark the 50th anniversary of the Trinidad and Tobago’s independence and the establishment of diplomatic relations between Canada and Trinidad & Tobago.

The events include cultural and sports activities, trade shows, music and film, all cumulating in a gala event at the Ottawa Convention Centre on September 1, 2012.


Some of these activities are being co-hosted with other "Trini-flavoured" organizations "under the "TrinbaGold 50" logo.
“This is not only a time for Trinbagonians to commemorate the great progress our homeland has made, but also to invite and welcome all Ottawans to come out and celebrate with us.” said Ingrid Barclay John-Baptiste, President of the Trinidad and Tobago Associations of Ottawa (TTAO). 

The Ottawa launch of the 50th Anniversary celebrations will take place on Saturday May 5, 2012 with a short official ceremony followed by a cultural extravaganza, featuring La Petite Musicale, a folk-choir and performing theatre group from Toronto. The event will be held at the Kailash Mital Theatre, Carleton University, 1125 Colonel By Drive, Ottawa.

The TTAO sponsors and supports activities and events that reflect the cultural diversity of Trinidad & Tobago. It also strives to foster and maintain strong relationships with the wider National Capital community.

  • Ottawa launch - Saturday May 5, 2012
  • Indian Arrival Day - co-hosted by Caribbean Hummingbirds and TTAO at the St. Mark Evangelist Anglican Church
  • Independence 50 Family Day Picnic and Soccer Game, co- hosted with Hurricane Sports Club, Sunday, July 22, 2012 
  • Participation at the CARIVIBE Street parade- August 18, 2012, which is a street parade mirroring carnival in Trinidad & Tobago and Caribana in Toronto
  • Trinbagold 50 Day - August 25, 2012. 
  • Gala Dinner & Dance- September 1, 2012 at the Ottawa Convention Centre.
