My fellow citizens of Trinidad and Tobago, as we join our brothers and sisters of the Christian faith during this celebration of Easter in commemoration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ, let us give thanks to Almighty God for this ultimate sacrifice of love, peace and goodwill toward all of humanity.
The Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ form the basis of the Christian Faith and the fulfilment of God’s promise to mankind of eternal salvation. A promise of mercy and forgiveness.
As I reflect on this event in history and the celebrations of today, I recall the powerful words of Jesus Christ when he said: “I have come to bring life, life in abundance...”

It is Jesus who brings us hope, joy and peace. It is He who brings us love, shows us how to live with each other as brothers and sisters of our common Father, and it is He who gives us all a reason to live.
Today we live in a fast paced world and spend much of our lives, it seems, working to accumulate material things at the expense of our sense of values and what is really important. The recently concluded Lenten period afforded all of us a time of reflection, an opportunity to examine our conscience and our inner selves, and to strengthen our resolve to be better individuals.
I encourage all citizens to look at the principles which embolden our drive to succeed and the kinship that we share as Trinbagonians. Let us examine whether “we love our neighbours as ourselves, or bear each other’s burdens”.
Whilst the Lenten season is a time of fasting, prayer, almsgiving, reconciliation, reflection and self-examination, I feel it is important that we remember that all areas of personal, professional, and national development must not be at the expense of our spiritual lives.
It is that Divine guiding light and the inner strength in all of us that drives us to greatness. Without this divine guidance I sincerely believe that we would be devoid of our true selves, our true mission and our purpose in this world, and the unique role that we all have to play in meaningful and sustained development of our beloved country of Trinidad and Tobago.

Each and every citizen is responsible for nation building and we must not only accept this responsibility but we must also wholeheartedly embrace it as we work towards making our country a place that we are proud to call our own.
The Easter message of rebirth and forgiveness also gives us hope that no matter what has happened in the past each new day carries with it the promise of a new beginning – another chance to make a positive difference. Through his resurrection, Jesus shows us that the power of love is stronger than death and that the darkness of death is overcome by the power of Divine Light and Life.
Dear citizens, whatever challenges we face, as individuals, as families, and as a nation, with the renewed strength and hope that Easter brings we can overcome these difficulties and continue on the path that Almighty God had laid out for each and every one of us. We need not be afraid because Jesus Christ has conquered all. A new hope has dawned.
A very happy and holy Easter to you all.
