Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar Prime Minister met on Monday with Panamanian President Ricardo Martinelli in Panama City.
She stopped in Panama on his way home from the VI Summit of the Americas which she attended in Colombia over the weekend.
Both leaders held discussions on the Caribbean Investment Forum 2012, which is scheduled to be held in Port of Spain on May 14 and 15.
Martinelli accepted Persad-Bissessar's invitation to address the investment forum as the keynote speaker and to lead a trade delegation comprising members of the Panamanian private and public sectors.
Both leaders also discussed matters arising out of the Americans summit. They agreed that the forum provided an excellent networking opportunity to deepen and widen trade relations and partnerships between CARICOM and Latin America.
Persad Bissessar followed up energy discussions she began with the Panamanian government during her state visit earlier this year with respect to the establishment of bunkering facilities for Trinidad & Tobago in the Panama Canal.
Martinelli reiterated Panama's desire to buy propane and butane gas from Trinidad & Tobago. He also expressed an interest in buying petroleum products from National Petroleum (NP) in Trinidad.
One area of interest is the possibility of establishing a lubricant blending plant as well as a LPG bottling facility. This idea would be pursued further next week when Panama's Minister of Energy of Panama visits Trinidad & Tobago.
During the visit the minister and his T&T counterpart, Kevin Ramnarine, will meet with the relevant state enterprises to advance the discussions held between the leaders of the two countries.
The Trinidad and Tobago delegation will meet with Panamanian officials again Tuesday to continue the discussion on energy and other related matters. The team returns home to Trinidad on Wednesday.
