Businessman Rabindra Moonan is the new chairman of Caribbean Airlines.
He succeed George Nicholas III who resigned on Monday following criticism of his board's performance.
In his letter of resignation the Finance Minister Winston Dookeran, Nicholas said, "Further to the MoT’s (Minister of Transport) comments on my performance, a five out of ten in comparison to other State boards on national television last night (Monday) and other comments, both written and in private, I have resigned with immediate effect."
Transport Minister Devant Maharaj told local media Thursday he has accepted the resignation of Nicholas and that Moonan has agreed to take uop the responsibility of chairing the board.
Maharaj made the official announcement at the post cabinet media briefing. “Today Cabinet noted the resignation of the chairman of CAL, George Nicholas III and accepted that resignation today,” Maharaj said.
“We note the service that Mr Nicholas has contributed towards CAL over the last few months...I thank him for his service.”
Maharaj expressed confidence in Moonan, saying he has the skills and aptitude to “carry CAL in these very trying times for the aviation industry globally."
He added, “We feel he has the interpersonal skills that are required to hold the board together and to chart these, yet very treacherous skies, in terms of the competition,” Maharaj said. “Mr Moonan is a university graduate, former employee of the Central Bank for a number of years as an economist and a businessman.”
The minister stood behind comments about the board's performance. “I was asked to rate boards that fall under my watch,” he said. “I gave all the boards five and I gave that in the context of the area of neglect that the boards met from the previous administration and the amount of work and resources they have and the fact that there is always room for improvement.
“It is unfortunate that Mr Nicholas took it personally, but I have no regrets at this point in time.”
The minister said said if chairmen of other boards want to resign as a result of his rating of their performances “they are free to do so.”
Moonan has said he is committed to keep CAL flying
