A top member of the Congress of the People (COP) told reporters in Trinidad Monday he has been told that after more than two years of investigations police still do not have enough credible evidence to charge former UDeCOTT executive chairman Calder Hart with anything.
The party's deputy political leader, Dr Anirudh Mahabir, said that's the word he got from Commissioner of Police Dwayne Gibbs.
Mahabir and COP chairman, Joseph Toney, met with Gibbs at his office to discuss the recent police raids at CCN TV6, Newsday and the Transport and Industrial Workers Union (TIWU).
The police have said their actions were intended to get critical evidence to assist in their investigations. With respect to the raids, Toney said Gibbs explained police had to act in the manner they did because of the nature of the investigations.
Mahabir said Gibbs assured his party that the Hart investigation is continuing. Hart is under investigation for alleged perjury based on evidence presented at the Uff commission of enquiry into UDeCOTT and the construction sector.
Mahabir said while COP felt the investigation is taking too long he was happy with the assurance he got from the police chief. Toney described the meeting with Gibbs as "open, frank and productive".
