Moonilal running slate for UNC election with no candidate for chairman

Moonilal's team
Roodal Moonilal is supporting his own slate of candidates for the March 24 internal election of the United National Congress (UNC).

It is one of three contesting the election for 17 seats on the party's national executive (NATEX). The post of political leader, currently held by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, is not up for election.

UNC founder and former leader Basdeo Panday is supporting a team called Generation Next but is not running for any post. And party activist Sunil Ramjitsingh is also putting up a team, known as UNC Soldiers.

None of the three slates has a candidate for Chairman, the post that Jack Warner holds. However, that could change at the close of nomination on Sunday.

Warner is running as an independent candidate as he did in 2010 when he won a landslide over Vasant Bharath, who was supported by Panday. His main challenger is his former aide, Ashwani Mahabir, who is also running as an independent and has the support of the Maha Sabha, the main Hindu organisation in the country.

The Changuanas West MP launched his campaign for the election at a meeting in his constituency Saturday night focusing on his record of bringing democratic change to the party, supporting Persad-Bissessar for leader and helping the party win two elections in 2010 that took the UNC from the "wilderness" of opposition to centre stage as the main party in the five-member People's Partnership coalition.

Moonilal plans to introduce members of his team at a mass meeting on Wednesday evening at Debe junction.

One of the members of the team is Local Government Minister Chandresh Sharma who hosted a planning meeting Saturday at which government ministers, mayors, chairmen and councillors of regional corporations pledged their support for Moonilal’s team.

Moonilal will defending his post as one of the party's three deputy leaders. The other candidate for deputy leader is the incumbent Suruj Rambachan. Moonilal's team doesn't have a third deputy leader candidate.

Health Minister Dr Fuad Khan is running for that post and up to now he is doing it as an independent.

Moonilal confirmed to reporters that there will be no candidate for chairman on his slate but did not say which candidate his team is supporting for that post. He urged supporters to exercise their free vote in deciding who they want as the UNC chairman.

The Oropouche East MP and Housing Minister made it clear that he wants the Panday team to be shut out. He is confident for a landslide win for his members but still warned UNC supporters against complacency, telling that they must not allow the General Next slate to get any votes.
