Jack is back; Nationalists sweep UNC elections

UNC Political Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar with party chairman Jack Warner after Persad-Bissessar voted Saturday in the party's internal election. The PL did not support any candidate or slate during the campaign
The United National Congress (UNC) returned Chairman Jack Warner to office Saturday, giving the Chaguanas West MP a resounding vote of confidence in the party's internal election.

The preliminary results show that Warner was well ahead of his opponent, attorney Ashwani Mahabir, although voter turnout was low at about 20 per cent.

Roodal Moonilal's Nationalists made a clean sweep, returning Moonilal and Suruj Rambachan as Deputy Leaders with newcomer Marlene Coudray winning the third deputy position.

Two other "new" faces on Moonilal's team also won handily - Chandresh Sharma took the Party Organiser position and Glenn Ramadharsingh will be in charge of coordinating the UNC's affairs in Central Trinidad.

All the other members, except the vice-chair, were on the team from 2010 and was the approval of UNC voters who voted on the basis of a one member, one vote system.

Warner ran as an independent as did some of the other contenders, including former Deputy Leader Lyndira Oudit, who decided to run for vice chair; and Fuad Khan and Herbert Volney, who both ran for posts of deputy leader.

The preliminary results show that Khadijah Ameen, who was a newcomer on the Nationalists slate, won the vice chair position, defeating Oudit.

Moonilal confirmed to local media that although officials are still counting ballots his team won and that Warner was returned as chairman, having won "comfortably".

The two other slates were shut out. One was led by party activist Sunil Ramjitsingh and the other was guided and advised by former UNC leader Basdeo Panday and his daughter, ex-Oropouche West MP Mickela Panday.

Many people complained that their names were not on the list, making it impossible for them to vote. However a party official explained that in many instances it was because the supporters did not maintain their membership by paying the annual dues so they did not qualify to be on the list.

The party's electoral list showed that there are about 81,000 registered members. Warner has promised that he would make that number grow as he works with the national executive to expand membership.

The UNC will continue tallying the results Sunday and likely make a formal announcement about the results either later Sunday or on Monday.

Trinidad politics is pathetic.
Dr Fuad Khan and Dr Roodhal Moonihal don't deserve the title as Deputy Political Leader.
He is very retrograde and Trinidad will stay at third world status if left up to him. The citizens of Trinidad are angry with the results from the internal election of the party. We want a re-election, something had to have gone wrong. However, maybe it would be best for the country to have these doctors in charge of the politics because alot of Trinidad has lost their minds. The Trinidadian race is very backward, due to post-slavery thought.
The only reason Jack Warner won so many votes was because of his role with CONCACAF and football. We don't think he has what it takes to run this country otherwise.
