Highway re-route movement to meet PM Friday

A group that wants a section of the Point Fortin highway rerouted is scheduled to meet Friday with Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar.

The group, which is ked by activist Wayne Kublalsingh, has called the stretch between Mon Desir and Debe an “atrocity” and said it is “shameless.” Kublalsingh said an alternative route that his grouo is proposing can save money and prevent the destruction of 1,000 acres of agricultural lands and 300 homes.

The Newsday newspaper quoted Kublalsingh as saying that the Government could save $4 billion if it were to re-route the Debe to Mon Desir segment of the San Fernando to Point Fortin Highway through uninhabited Caroni lands, using the M2 Ring Road in south Trinidad. The figure is more than half of the projected cost of the highway, which is $7.2 billion.
Kublalsingh and about 80 people from the Highway Re-Route Movement staged a demonstration Thursday outside the Office of the Prime Minister in St Clair and demanded a meeting with the Prime Minister.

The group told reporters it wants to present its proposal for re-routing the Mon Desir to Debe section of the Golconda to Mon Desir Highway.

“After having made many, many attempts to meet with the Prime Minister, including going to her private residence, meeting with her key ministers, meeting with her key advisers, submitting letters, texting her advisers; we have got an unsatisfactory answer," Kublalsingh said adding that meeting with Works Minister Jack Warner and Oropouche East MP Roodal Moonilal did not make any progress.
