Ready to rumble; UNC, PNM hold meetings to rally support for Friday's confidence vote

The United National Congress (UNC) is holding a mass meeting at the Couva South Constituency complex on Tuesday to rally support for Friday's opposition motion calling on the House of Representatives to declare that it has no confidence in Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar.

The meeting is one of three that the party has organised ahead of Friday's debate on the motion.

Foreign Affairs and Communications Minister Dr Suruj Rambachan said on Sunday UNC members and supporters have called for the meetings to show that they have confidence in the party's leader.

“Hundreds of supporters of the Prime Minister including her constituents, gathered today (Sunday) to express a vote of confidence in the Prime Minister's leadership of the country and the Government and as well as her competence to lead the country.

"They have asked that the Prime Minister meet with constituents throughout the country and in that regard three meetings have been planned for this week.”

On Wednesday the UNC team will be in Persad-Bissessar's constituency for a mass meeting at Penal Junction. And the next day, the UNC moves into the Diego Martin constituency of Opposition Leader Keith Rowley with a meeting at the Diamond Vale Anglican Parish Hall.
Rowley has also been drumming up support among his supporters. On Monday he was in a walkabout at Enterprise in the Chaguanas East constituency, which was followed by a meeting at the New Jerusalem Baptist Church in enterprise.

The leader of the People's National Movement (PNM) is making a political gamble on his confidence motion, which is bound to fail since his party has 11 votes to the government's 29. The 12th PNM member is Patrick Manning, who recently suffered a stroke and is on medical leave from Parliament.

Rambachan has said supporters of the People's partnership have stated that Rowley should step down as political leader of the PNM when he loses the no confidence debate.

“If he loses this vote on Friday - as he's going to lose - then his own political integrity will demand that he also resign as the Opposition Leader and the leader of the PNM," Rambachan said.
