Police warn TCL strikers about intimidating workers

Police warned members of the Oilfields Workers’ Trade Union (OWTU) Tuesday not to intimidate labourers who broke the picket line at Trinidad Cement Ltd (TCL).

The union has deemed those who cross the picket lines traitors. The company had to call in police to escort the workers through the company’s gates in Claxton Bay.

OWTU vice-president Carlton Gibson told reporters the union would not take responsibility for injuries to anyone who breaks the strike to work in the factory.

However Gibson told police no union members had intimidated anyone. He stated that the OWTU is engaged in legal strike action and the union has a responsibility to advise the "scab labourers" about its position.

“If these workers engage in strike-breaking tactics, I don’t know that we will be able to protect their interests in terms of insurance, so it is our duty to advise them of such,” Gibson told the police.
