Children from more than 50 Hindu schools across Trinidad are taking part in the 16th Annual Primary School’s Chowtaal Sammelan, which was launched Saturday at the headquarters of the Sanatan Dharma Maha Sabha (SDMS).
Chowtaal is a genre of Hindu folk music that's sung during the Phagwa or Holi festival.
It's celebrated in the Sping and is considered a harvest celebration. However it also has deep religious significance, focusing on the theme of the conquest of evil by the forces of righteousness.
The theme for the 2012 celebration is: “A new beginning, tribute to Lord Krishna.”
