Baby born in KFC toilet dies at hospital

Shawna Nagasser with baby Isiah in hospital
A baby born in a toilet at a fast food restaurant in Sangre Grande has died.

The Guardian newspaper reported Sunday that Isiah Nagasser died Saturday yesterday.

Isiah's mother, Shawna, gave birth in a toilet at the KFC restaurant where an employee who had been trained as a nursing aide rescued the infant from a toilet. Police assisted in getting the baby to the Sangre Grande Hospital.

Chairman of the Eastern Regional Health Authority Stephen Bhagan was quoted in the paper as saying that when nurses checked on Isiah at around 4 am he was fine. However, they found him dead one hour later.

The baby was sleeping on the same bed with his mother and there is speculation that she may have accidentally suffocated him. The authorities won't know the cause of death until an autopsy is done.

The Guardian said Bhaggan confirmed that babies are not supposed to sleep on the beds since basinets are provided for them. He is conducting an investigation to find out why that rule was changed.
