The Port Authority of Trinidad and Tobago (PATT) and the Seamen and Waterfront Workers Trade Union (SWWTU) have signed off on a five per cent wage increase for workers at the Port of Spain docks.
Other details of the agreement are yet to be negotiated. SWWTU president Michael Annisette signed the agreement, which was reached last week. It is specific to the port and covers wages and salaries. The matter has been on the table for more than 40 months.
Workers will get two per cent for year one, one per cent for the second year and another two per cent in the final year of the three-year deal. There will be a consolidation of cost of living allowances (COLA) on all three years instead of the first year as initially offered by the Government.
Annisette has stated that the deal he negotiated will give workers more than a five per cent increase.
In a related development, the port at Point Lisas was closed for a second day Thursday because workers did not report for duty.
Plipdeco chairman Ian Atherly has called workers "inconsiderate" for walking off the job. "It is all about games and it is we the citizens, including the same union members, who will suffer," he told the Trinidad Express.
He added, "There was no breakdown of negotiations, there was no counter-offer so the walk-out was surprising." He said he hopes to have the port in operation again on Friday.
