T&T security forces uncover plot to assassinate PM Kamla, AG and top ministers

JYOTI has confirmed that security forces in Trinidad & Tobago have uncovered a "credible" plot to assassinate Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, Attorney General Anand Ramlogan, Housing Minister Dr Roodal Moonilal and Local Government Minister Chandresh Sharma.

There was higher than normal security at Reinzi complex Wednesday evening where Persad-Bissessar attended a meeting of the national executive of the United National Congress (UNC). She arrived by helicopter at Camden airfield and was whisked to the UNC headquarters, located just a kilometre away.

At Reinzi there was a strong military presence in addition to extra police and the Prime Minister's personal security detail.

Media reports say the military is on high alert and are confined to base until further notice. The reports also say that U.S. intelligence helped unearth the assassination plot.

One report linked the plot to a Muslim organisation in central Trinidad and speculated that the motive is to take revenge on the top government officials for declaring a state of emergency.

The local television network CNC3, owned by the Guardian Media, carried a detailed report in its nightly news bulletin.

Guardian media reported that seven people have been detained in connection with the plot including a businessman from the Valsayn Park area and another person who had been detained under the State of Emergency and later released.

The state-owned television service, CNMG also carried a story on the plot in which it confirmed that security personnel are on high alert. It reported that off duty soldiers, Coast Guard personnel men and members of the Air Guard have been recalled to active duty.

CNMG said national security sources and two senior Government officials confirmed that security has been tightened around the Prime Minister and the three members of Cabinet.

It said one senior government official confirmed that some suspects have been rounded up are detained and more arrests are expected.
