Senator demands an apology from Hinds

Government Senator Danny Maharaj is demanding an apology from opposition Senator Fitzgerald Hinds for a statement Hinds made in the Senate on Tuesday.

Hinds heaped scorn on a man in dreadlocks who shook hands with Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar during her tour of flood ravaged areas.

"I saw an idiot little Rasta boy kissing the Prime Minister's palm. That made me sick. And if I had my way, I cut every dreadlock off his head, every one, Madame vice President, that idiot boy, what a rude little dreadlock", Hinds stated.

Maharaj said, "These remarks are not only insulting to the young man and Rastafarians across the country but it makes one wonder on whose authority could Senator Hinds "cut every dreadlock off his head".

"Is he the new leader of Rastafarians in Trinidad and Tobago? Has he majored in barbering? It is no surprise that a damning word like "idiot" can be used to describe the young man.

"It was only last year that the Leader of the PNM and Opposition Leader used the term "duncyhead" in relation to students who were supposed to receive laptops. It seems all too clear that only disparaging remarks are used to define our nation's youth by members of the People's National Movement," Maharaj said.

"Senator Hinds should be made aware that the People's Partnership stands for inclusiveness and national unity.

"Hinds insisted that felt sick when he heard a woman saying that she had forgiven the Government for detaining her son during the State of Emergency because she was happy that he found employment in the Government's 'Colour Me Orange' programme.

"Senator Hinds should not be one to comment on forgiveness and issues concerning the State of Emergency and the Colour Me Orange Programme, after having failed miserably as a former Minister serving in the Ministry of National Security under the PNM administration."

He called on Hinds to publicly apologise to the young man and the woman to whom he was referring with "the most offensive and repugnant" remarks.
