SDMS locks out students and teachers at Tunapuna Hindu School

Classes resumed Tuesday at the Tunapuna Hindu School following an agreement reached with the main stakeholders with regard to the status of the school's principal.

The Sanatan Dharma Maha Sabha (SDMS) locked out students and teachers from the school Monday to protest a decision by the Teaching Service Commission to have the principal of the school resume duties there, effective Monday.

Parents and the SDMS have objected to the return of Sita Gadjadarsingh-Nanga although both the TSC and the Ministry of Education have supported her return to her post.

Education Minister Dr. Tim Gopeesingh told reporters on Sunday Gadjadarsingh-Nanga must be allowed to continue her duties while an investigation continues into an impasses between the Maha Sabha Education Board and herself.

Gadjadharsingh-Nanga has accused the Maha Sabha Secretary General Sat Maharaj of trying to block African children from attending the school, an allegation that Maharaj has denied.

He has stated that the principal refused to carry out legitimate instructions of the SDMS Education Board with respect to her duties at the school. With respect to the charge about the ethnicity of students he pointed out that there are 22 children at the school who are of african descent, noting that the enrolment at the school is a reflection of the demographics of the area.

Parents told reporters Monday they do not want the principal to return to the school. Ishwal Mootoo, the President of the Parent Teachers Association said the principal is ineffective.

"This has nothing to do with race because at this school there are Afro-Trinidadian students and there have always been and there will continue to be. It is a blatant lie by the Principal.

"The real issue is in the two and a half to three years that the Principal has been in this school, our children have been deprived the use of the school library. She shut it down," Mootoo.
