Media reports in Trinidad & Tobago Friday said security forces have made more arrests in the investigation into a plot to assassinate Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and top members of her cabinet.
The reports say suspects have been held in several parts of the country including San Juan, Princes Town and Valencia and that some of the suspects have ties to a mosque in Enterprise, Chaguanas.
Twelve people previously detained include a Muslim cleric from Princes Town who has ties to the mosque, and a senior member of the Jamaat al Muslimeen.
One news report said investigators intercepted a phone conversation between the Jamaat member and a gang leader in which the two men allegedly discussed a plan to harm government ministers.
Although one suspect is a Muslimeen member, the media reports say police have not established a direct link between the Muslimeen and the plotters.
The reports say the detained Jamaat member was a close associate of murdered gang leader, Mark Guerra. He had was charged in a 2003 murder but was freed.
