COP condemns attack on democracy, praises protective services

The Congress of the People (COP) issued a media release Friday in which  congratulated the Protective Services for the work they did in foiling a plot against Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and top cabinet members.

The party, which is a member of the governing coalition, called the plot an attack on the country's democracy.
"We condemn and reject any effort to destroy, undermine, subvert or attack the democratic process," the release stated.

"The COP therefore expects that our intelligence and security forces will pursue their mandate with diligence, determination, fortitude and relentless courage until our society is freed of those destabilising elements whose mission is to fulfill extremist misguided, criminal and undemocratic objectives," it added.

The party also said it expects all arms of the State to do their duty in ensuring that Constitutional rights and freedoms of all are upheld.

"The COP is confident that the protective services and the Judiciary understand their roles and the duty which they have to the nation.

"Simultaneously, we urge all those who hold leadership roles in the society to be conscious of their duty to the nation and our people. We must all do our part to ensure that no opportunity for the wanton destruction which was experienced in 1990 is repeated," the party said.
