Health tip: 15 minutes of walking can add years to your life

How much time do your spend on that couch watching TV?

Well the truth is that couch-potato lifestyle is cheating you of the opportunity to live healthy and longer.

So here's the best thing you can do for yourself. Hit the off button, put on some walking shoes and go for a walk with someone you love.

That's me, with my lovely spouse, Sero, taking a walk on Queen Street, Toronto
Or you can go alone. (I prefer to do it with the love of my life)

Walking is one of the best known, least expensive ways to prolong your life.

One recent study tracked 400,000 people for eight years and found that walking 15 minutes a day added three years to their life expectancy. While that is pretty amazing by itself the statistics show something even more exciting.

Compared to your couch-potato lifestyle, your chances of dying from pretty much anything is cut by by 14 per cent. So is there a better reason to go for a walk?

If you are now getting off the couch start slowly with 15 minutes and then gradually double it. Do a brisk walk and you will feel even better.

Don't ake just take my word for it. The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the United States recommend 30 minutes of physical activity each day.

That prescription is a also terrific antidepressant. And it does much, much more!

It lowers your blood pressure and helps regulate blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes. It also cuts breast cancer risk by 30 per cent and increases survival rate from a heart attack by 80 per cent.

So what's keeping you?

Switch off the TV, turn off the computer and get out of the house. You really don't know what you are missing. Go out, walk about. Extend your life. It's worth it!
