A high speed chase and a shootout ensued following which three men were killed and three others injured. The community is angry over the killings, saying the three young men were just out having a good time and were themselves victims of a robbery.

Gibbs confirmed the investigation to the Newsday newspaper but said it is too early to provide any additional information.

“The investigation is still taking place into the circumstances and exactly what took place at that occurrence,” he said.

He said the investigation will take into account claims that the dead men were not bandits but were unfairly killed by the police. “This will be investigated, and certainly we take into consideration all witness evidence,” the commissioner said.

This is the second time this year that police are under scrutiny for shooting citizens. In a recent case in Moruga police killed three people in what they said was an exchange of gunfire.

Witnesses reported that it was an ":assassination" and that the victims were not armed at then time.

Seven police officers have since been charged with murder.
