Poll suggests strong support for State of Emergency

A survey by the North American Caribbean Teachers’ Association (NACTA) suggests that an overwhelming majority of 74 per cent support the state of emergency in Trinidad & Tobago.

However it also suggests that there is less support for the curfew, with some respondents saying it should be lifted while others believe it should be imposed on the entire country.

NACTA said it conducted random interviews to 410 persons reflecting the demographic composition of the voting population.

It said 74 per cent responded that they support the emergency, saying it has provided a sense of safety and that it has been a deterrent to crime.

When asked if they back the extension of the state of emergency through December, support slipped to 64 per cent with young people saying it has affected their social life. The business community also complained that the curfew is hurting revenues.

A minority of 24 per cent want the curfew hours to go back to 9 pm to 5 am
