Audit team for San F'do general Hospital: Khan

Health Minister Dr Fuad Khan told reporters Sunday an audit team will probe recent developments at the San Fernando General Hospital and identify limitations at the institution.

He said it would comprise a medical professional, a surgical person, an administrator from the South-West Regional Health Authority (SWRHA) and a senior midwife.

Khan spoke with the media after he launched the Cataract Surgeries Reduction Programme at the Port of Spain General Hospital.

He was responding to questions about the death of a 29-year-old La Brea mother at the High Dependence Unit at the hospital on Saturday. He said, "Something may have occurred in the antenatal which may not have been picked up".

The minister added, "These problems occur possibly with antenatal, more so, than delinquency at that hospital." He said the team would look at all aspects of prenatal cases. And he gave the assurance that there will be no cover up.

"At the end of the day we have the Chief Medical Officer (Dr Anton Cumberbatch) and doctors who are not part of the system. The report goes to the CMO and also the Ministry of Health," Khan said.

Khan also updated the media on the seasonal dengue problem noting that the situation is being monitored. He said some health centres have extended their hours.
