Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar said on Tuesday criminal activity in Trinidad and Tobago has ground to almost zero since the declaration of a limited state of emergency and gangs are on the run.
She spoke with reporters after touring the Chancery Lane complex which is being converted from an administrative facility to a part of the San Fernando general hospital complex with an additional 234 beds.
The facility is scheduled to be opened in December to provide a complete range of health services.
Commenting on the nation's security, Persad-Bissessar said, "I am pleased to report that the results are already coming in that critical information has been gleaned, weapons and ammunition seized and bandits who fought with our law enforcement units have been killed."
She added, "Already, criminal activity has ground to almost zero and gangs are on the run.
"I am quite aware that this lull is due to the limitations imposed upon the criminal elements but which is also confining the freedom of innocent citizens. This is but Day Two of the limited state of emergency yet all the indicators are there that the strategy is delivering the positive results expected."
The Prime Minister also thanked members of the protective services. "Let us all be grateful to the joint services carrying out these dangerous exercises. The nation salutes each and every one of you."
